Adham Shaikh : ethno-electronic-groove composer/producer/keyboardist (Ekko - Interchill Records )

Now based in the lush surroundings of the Canadian & US Northwest coastal regions, innovator Adham Shaikh is best known for his diverse explorations into organic electronic ambient composition. Producing music for the past 15 years, Shaikh began recording and releasing his nature inspired signature blend of global groove in the early nineties.

His latest releases include 2 tracks appearing on the Mana Medicine Compilation (Dragonfly UK), Pronoia and Mossman appearing on Sunset Magnetic North (Waveform US), sabhadi on Interchill's most recent compilation Floatation (Interchill Oct 2001), and Dubsonic - new dub project featuring ex-members of Yabby You and Dub Central.

Shaikh's most recent Drift singles with guitar instrumentalist Tim Floyd appear on both Interchill's Sky Dancing and Interior Horizons compilations as well as on Dragonfly's latest. An incarnation of his own four member performance project EKKO - Centripetal (Interchill 1998) entitled Ekkocentric (Interchill 2000) ; a double CD & triple vinyl set includes remixes by world renowned artists including Neotropic, Zion Train, Neil Sparkes (ex-Transglobal Underground), Makyo, Legion of Green Men, and the New Deal, among others. Shaikh has also remixed such artists as S.e.t.i., Subdub, Legion of Green Men, his own Ekko, and Lisa Walker.

Since 1993, Shaikh released three full-length albums (Realignment, Journey to the Sun, and Drift), two EPs (X-Drone & Modulation Elektronic), and has contributed numerous tracks on the Instinct Records Ambient Compilation Series that have earned him a reverent following throughout Europe and North America.

In 1997 the sonic turtle was born. A mobile, multipurpose electronic studio capable of digital hard disk recording, editing, sampling, synthesis and sequencing. A studio re-built into a vehicle (1954 Clipper) enabling Shaikh to record electronic, acoustic, and work on sound design and site specific field recording.

Born in the UK with a wide range of influences, growing up in rural Ontario, and now residing in western Canada, Shaikh began listening to Indian ragas and classical western music at an early age. He studied electro-acoustic composition Queens University in Kingston, while developing an ear for the musics of the east.

Performance highlights have included the 2001 Harvest Festival (Eastern Ontario), opening for Spearhead at the 2001 Starbelly Jam Music Festival (B.C.), the 2001 Soundwave (B.C.), the 2001 EarthDance Festival (B.C.), the 2000 & 2001 Shambahla Festivals (B.C.), and the 1999 OM Festival (Eastern Ontario). Shaikh has been creating live ambient soundscape environments in public gathering spaces for many years in Vancouver and djing in London UK, Glastonbury (UK), Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Victoria, and Salt Spring Island B.C.
